Bajaj Pulsar NS400


Bajaj Auto is one of India’s oldest and largest two-wheeler manufacturers, founded in 1926. Headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, Bajaj has a strong presence across India and exports to over 70 countries. The company is renowned for making affordable and reliable commuter motorcycles like the iconic Bajaj Chetak and Bajaj Platina. Bajaj’s Pulsar range of sports motorcycles is also hugely popular, especially among younger enthusiasts.

Motorcycle Category:


The Pulsar NS400 falls in the “naked sports” segment, which aims to offer the sporty character and performance of racing motorcycles in a more practical and affordable package. Naked sports bikes remove the weight and aerodynamic compromises of full fairing bodywork to showcase a raw, unadulterated view of the engine, chassis and other mechanical components. This also makes maintenance and repairs easier. The focused ergonomics and aggressive styling retains their exhilarating performance.

Engine Details:


The NS400 will be powered by a 399.5cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine expected to generate a peak power output of around 44 hp and max torque of about 37 Nm. This level of performance will make the NS400 Bajaj’s most powerful Pulsar yet. The engine is likely based on the KTM 390 Duke’s motor given the collaboration between the two brands. Liquid-cooling helps the engine sustain high rpm operation without overheating while the fuel injection system offers precise fuel metering and throttle response.

Transmission:


Power will be transmitted via a 6-speed manual gearbox featuring a precise and smooth-shifting action. The rider can tap into the engine’s performance by selecting the right gear to keep the revs in the sweet spot. Multiple gears allow efficient cruising as well as rapid acceleration. A slipper clutch will facilitate aggressive downshifts while limiting rear wheel hop under hard braking.

Frame and Chassis:


The Pulsar NS400 is expected to use a pressed-steel perimeter frame which integrates the engine as a stressed member for rigidity. Steering geometry has likely been optimized after extensive testing for nimble handling abilities. The chassis comprises a box-section swingarm, telescopic front forks, and preload-adjustable rear monoshock absorbers.

Brakes and Tires:


Braking duties will be handled by 300mm and 230mm petal disc brakes at the front and rear respectively, along with dual-channel ABS for safety. The large discs provide strong bite for controlled halts from triple digit speeds. Tubeless radial tires sized 110/70 R17 front and 150/60 R17 rear offer ample grip and stability when leaned over around corners.

Dimensions and Capacities:


With an overall length of 2035mm, width of 785mm, and height of 1060mm along with 1355mm wheelbase, the NS400’s footprint strikes a balance between agility and high-speed stability. Its ground clearance facilitates cornering clearance while lean angles. An 11-liter fuel tank gives it decent range between stops.

Design and Features:


The NS400’s sharp, angular design language includes a tri-beam LED headlamp, sculpted fuel tank with extensions, split step-up seats, exposed mechanical bits, and chopped exhaust. A digital instrument console offers navigation, smartphone connectivity and enables customization. The bike will come shod with 17-inch alloy wheels.

Launch Timeframe and Estimated Pricing:


Bajaj is expected to launch the Pulsar NS400 in the Indian market sometime in early 2023. It will likely be priced from Rs. 1.8 lakhs to Rs. 2 lakhs ex-showroom. This competitive pricing will make it a value for money proposition in the segment.
